Christine Fellows - Not Wanted On The Voyage
I picked up this album just because I was ordering some Luke Doucet odds and ends from Six Shooter when they were having a sale. One of her tracks was playing on the “in-store radio” thingy that pops up and ordinarily I hit stop straight away, but I didn’t this time. I listened to one of her songs, then another, then thought “hey, they’re only $5 each, let’s grab her albums”, so I did and TOTALLY BEST $5 I’VE EVER SPENT. The songs are all quite sweet, and short, and slightly ramshackle, and not really doing anything other than presenting little musical and lyrical vignettes - there aren’t any huge emotional ballads or sweeping narrative arcs, at least that I’ve been able to identify as yet. How are these little bite-sized songs so engaging? Definitely greater than the sum of their parts.
