4: Colin Stetson - New History Warfare: Vol 2 - Judges
I think a lot of people I know would probably find this unlistenable, and I find that disappointing. It’s such a thrill to listen to this guy perform - a true virtuoso. When I say “he plays the saxophone and other instruments you blow through” you’ll either laugh at the innuendo or just assume he’s blowing jazz. This guy makes those instruments make every sound under the sun. They are the percussion, the drone under the melody, sharp staccato notes soaring above a drone, punctuated in places with the clear sound of his breathing. While the tracks which are just him playing are brilliant, here Laurie Anderson and Shara Worden assist by providing voice on a few tracks, which I think lift some of the works above and give them a real punch. Brilliant.
